What is an Electronically Commutated Motor? 

EC motor (Electronically Commutated Motor), also known as permanent magnet, brush free or Brush-less DC (BLDC), is motor with built-in power inverters that convert AC voltage to DC voltage. EC motor is a BLDC motor that runs on DC voltage using an AC power source, combining the best of both technology. Due to the numerous technical advantages of EC motors, EC motor technology is used in fan-driven unit and system designs. EC motor features dedicated power plugs, which handle fewer cables and make installation quicker.
 
A major benefit of using EC motor in fan-powered equipment is their energy efficiency. EC motors are smaller than other motors and offer the same level of performance. This is because they do not rely on carbon brushes, but are controlled by an external electronic circuit board. Therefore, they provide greater controllability and higher efficiency. So, unlike DC motor or AC motor, EC motor only runs when needed and don't overuse energy.

How Do EC Motors / BLDC Motors Work?

An EC motor (electronically commutated motor) is a synchronous motor powered by an inverter with permanent magnets in an external rotor design. The stator is driven by electronic switches controlled by a micro-controller. Motors require AC voltage signals and DC voltage signals to operate.
The supply voltage, alternating current (AC), is rectified by the electronic commutation of EC motors. The downstream inverter supplies the motor with voltage via a direct current (DC) signal according to the specified load. Compared to AC asynchronous motors, EC motors are synchronous, avoiding slip losses and providing higher efficiency over a wider speed range.
Its speed depends on the DC voltage supplied to the motor through the inverter module, similar to the principle of controlling a frequency converter. However, the electronics of the motor are different in that it controls which phase of the stator to direct the current to based on the position and direction of rotation.

What is the difference between an EC motor and a BLDC motor?

EC motors are not a new technology. They are just permanent magnet brushless DC (BLDC) motors, the difference is their commutation method (i.e. electronics) rather than their lack of the physics of brushes. These motors, whether called "brushless DC motor" or "electronically commutated motor" , have a permanent magnet rotor with a wound stator. The electronics determine the commutation or energization sequence of the stator windings based on the rotor position.
Often people think that an EC motor is really just a BLDC motor with a different name. However, one agency distinguishes between a permanent magnet brushless DC motor (BLDC motor) with independent drive and control and a motor with integrated drive and control (EC motor).
